Welcome from the Nursing Professional Advisory Committee (N-PAC) Mentoring Committee

Welcome to the N-PAC Nursing PHS Mentoring Program.  The Nursing Mentoring Program offers a one to one communication network affording the mentor the opportunity to provide guidance to the mentee, on career and professional development, goals and objectives.

Goals of this Mentoring Program include:

  • Facilitating the transition of junior nurse employees (civil servants and commissioned officers) into the U.S. Public Health Service.
  • The provision of a nurse mentor(s) to provide information and serve as a resource to fellow PHS nurses throughout their career.
  • Promoting career development and providing a rewarding experience for both the mentor and mentee.

PHS NURSE MENTORING PROGRAM MENTORING RESOURCE DIRECTORY

DESCRIPTION

The N-PAC Mentoring Committee has developed a Nurse Mentoring Resource Directory (rev. 03/23/07). This directory is compiled of the names of  PHS nurses who have volunteered to be resources (mentors) on specific topics they feel competent and comfortable mentoring in.  This Resource Directory is available here on the N-PAC Mentoring website and the mentoring committee members also have this information.

The directory is organized alphabetically by topic and specialty areas.  Nurse mentors are listed under specific topics with their names, contact information and the length of time they are willing to serve as a mentor listed in italics and parenthesis, following their name.

APPLICATION PROCESS FOR MENTORS

Potential nurse mentors can access a nurse mentoring application from the N-PAC Mentoring website and other means.  The volunteer mentor candidate completes this application by answering all the requested information including contact information (email, phone, and/or fax number), three professional references (which mentoring committees will contact), a mailing address and a Curriculum Vitae. This application is then shared with the N-PAC Committee members who contact the applicant’s references.  If the reference checks are positive, the volunteer is then approved to be included in the directory as a Nurse Resource (mentor).  It there are already numerous volunteer mentors for a particular specialty, the mentor’s applications will be kept on file for future reference.

Whether the volunteer mentor is approved or not, they will be notified in writing by the mentoring committee.  If approved, they will receive a letter indicating this (this letter can be sent to their OPF if they so choose).  The approved mentor will also be sent an orientation packet (rev. 2/16/06) of information on the N-PAC mentoring program.  At intervals, they will be contacted with other information.   Mentors are asked to keep the N-PAC Mentoring committee informed of any change in their contact information, so this information can be updated and revised as necessary in the Directory.  They are also asked to submit a N-PAC Mentoring Bi-Annual Report to the committee, so progress of the program can be tracked.  Suggestions for revisions and improvements for the program are always solicited and asked to be sent to the N-PAC Mentoring email at phsnsgmentor@gmail.com.

If at any time a mentor is concerned about their interaction with the mentee, they are asked to contact the mentoring committee via email.  They are also asked not to mentor a mentee in an area they are not competent, or comfortable advising on.  If this situation arises, they should refer the mentee back to the Resource Directory to access another mentor and/or to the mentoring committee.

Mentees/ How to access a Nurse Resource/mentor

If a nurse (Mentee) wants information regarding a particular area in nursing, PHS or otherwise, they are encouraged to do either of the following.  The nurse can access the N-PAC Mentoring Resource Directory from the this website and find a nurse, or send their questions to the N-PAC Mentoring email at phsnsgmentor@gmail.com. The directory has listings in alphabetical order of the various topics and specialty areas.  Listed with this topic are the names of the volunteer nurse resources (mentors), they can contact to assist them in answering their questions.

If they are unable to access this directory, they can send an email to the Nurse Mentoring email site requesting information.  One of the N-PAC Mentoring committee members will contact them personally by email, or refer them to a nurse mentor who should be able to answer their questions.  If at anytime a mentee is unhappy or concerned about their interaction with their mentor, they are encouraged to contact the Mentoring Committee by email with their concerns.  They are also encouraged to offer suggestions to the Mentoring Committee regarding the mentoring program.

BECOMING A MENTOR COMMITTEE MEMBER

If you are a nurse interested in serving on the Mentoring Committee, please submit your application to become an approved Mentor (if you are not already one) and then submit a paragraph to the NPAC Mentoring Committee as to why you would like to become a committee member.  You can email this to our websites at phsnsgmentor@gmail.com

MENTORING EMAIL
